Stop Breed Specific Legislation!

What is Breed Specific Legislation? BSL is any law or group of laws that effects one breed of dog and not others. It targets the breed of dog, not the actions. Breed Bans and Breed Specific Legislation are becoming more and more common in many states. Unfortunantly, they are spreading quickly. These laws have previously been targeted at the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog that looks like one. Now these laws are being  used against Rottweilers, German Shepards, and Doberman Pinschers. Not only are these laws unfair to responsible owners, but they are unfair to innocent dogs. How far will we let it go?

The Real Problem

Below is a picture of my ever faithful friend Marley. A purebred American Pit Bull Terrier. Many shudder when they see him. You should see their reactions when they see Haze, our pregnant female. Or Trinity, our rescue Pit. Then theres Brutus, our proud male. Lets not forget Sadie, our shy yet beautiful buddy. We have five American Pit Bull Terriers. We also have 4 children, who the Pits protect with the love of a mother. 3 Cockatoos, who our Pits play tag with. A Golden Retriever, who the Pits think is the same as them. Our dogs are not the vicious monsters that society makes them out to be. They don't attack our children and tear them to pieces. I dont think theres a better babysitter then our Haze. Our Pits dont kill our Golden Retreiver or each other, even though according to popular belief, they should have by  now. All visitors to our home are greeted with energetic tail wagging and kisses. Our beloved Pit Bulls are not the problem. But if they aren't, then what is?

We as humans are the problem. We bred them for bull baiting, causing in the death of many a "pit bull" that was only doing what we asked it to. We began the dog fighting, and got a sick thrill out of watching our dogs tear others throats apart. They didn't want to, but it was what we taught them to do. We bred them incessantly, creating bad bloodlines and then encouraged aggressive behavior. Now that we have successfully ruined what used to be a good name, we are banning them. Irresponsible pet owners make it impossible for those who take pride in raising their Pit Bulls properly. The human race created this mess, and now we are blaming it on the dog we molded.

Can we condemn a race because a few of them committed robbery? Can we destroy an entire religious group because some of them harmed a member of another religious group. No. Why? Because we can't judge one mans actions based on anothers.

So how do people who have friendly well socialized pets counteract this problem? We fight back and stand up for the dogs that are loyal and loving. We speak up against those people who continue to drag our pets names through the mud. If we sit back and do nothing, this beautiful breed will no longer exist.
